Wanqing Liu, PhD

Dr. Wanqing Liu is a tenured Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Wayne State University. He also holds joint faculty appointments in the Department of Pharmacology at the School of Medicine and the Department of Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Prior to joining Wayne State University, Dr. Liu served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at the College of Pharmacy, Purdue University, and as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Liu has extensive expertise in the genetics and genomics of human liver diseases, cancer, and pharmacogenomics. He is a recognized leader in the discovery and development of precision medicine strategies and gene therapies for chronic liver disease and cancer. His group was the first to develop allele-specific oligonucleotide therapeutics for the targeted treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic hepatitis (MASH) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). He currently leads multiple NIH-funded research projects focused on advancing these therapeutics and elucidating the role of both genetic and environmental factors contributing to MASH, ALD, and cancers.
